Breast-Feeding

Q   Does breast-feeding hurt?
A   It shouldn't. If it hurts when you nurse your baby, contact the PHI Center at 850-222-7177 for more information on breast-feeding and breast-feeding support.

Q   I just can't get the hang of it. How can I get some help?
A   Contact the PHI Center, we'll offer you supportive advice and referrals to local breast-feeding support groups.

Q   How do I know if my baby is eating enough?
A   Your baby should have 6-8 wet diapers a day. You should hear your baby swallowing when he or she is nursing. Your baby's skin should be clear and firm, and your baby should be bright and alert.

Q   Now that I'm no longer pregnant, can I drink and smoke again?
A   Only if you want your baby to drink and smoke. Alcohol, drugs, and tobacco all pass through breast milk to the baby, and second hand smoke can cause serious health problems for children including pneumonia, asthma, and ear infections.

Q   Is it okay to nurse my baby in bed?
A   Only if you don't fall asleep with him/her. It is dangerous to sleep with your baby. It's easy to roll over and hurt your baby or suffocate him/her.
